Pendopharm, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, produces electrolyte gastro, an oral rehydration solution (ORS). This ORS will make a difference for the diarrhea that I will see in Nicaragua. The powder in one sachet can be mixed in 200 ml of clean water to produce a replacement solution for the watery small bowel diarrhea common with viral gastroenteritis.
Pendopharm donated 150 boxes of electrolyte gastro, and this donation will make a difference not only for the children I see, but for children in the region for months afterwards.
The physiological rational for ORS was discovered in the 60's and early solutions were effective to treat cholera. ORS was popularized by the World Health Organization (WHO). ORS has saved millions of lives.
So long as the Mother uses clean water and is taught to mix the powder in the correct amount of water, the sachets are ideal. They can be stored and used as necessary, the concentrations of sodium and glucose promote good absorption of sodium, and the
fruit taste is pleasant for the child.
In Haiti, clean water was not readily available and the families were so poor that they could not afford bottled water. I pre-mixed the solution personally for the children in bottles of water we purchased every morning. If I can find a ready source of bottled water I will consider the same practice in Nicaragua.
Julia Keshen, Associate Brand Manager, Consumer Products, for Pendopharm, made this donation possible.
